You're Never too old to Begin Music Lessons

Tips for Adults Considering Music Study:

CINCINNATI - You’re never too old to begin music lessons according to Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). And this is very strongly supported throughout Australia.

In fact, music lessons may be just what the doctor ordered for many older, healthy adults, based on the results of a recent study called the 'Making Music and Wellness' project.

"My grandfather began playing the violin in his eighties, and it gave me such pleasure to hear him perform with the energy and enthusiasm of a young boy," says Professor Midori Koga of Michigan State University, MTNA member and educational consultant for the recent wellness project. "In a supportive environment, we have found that there are tremendous health and emotional benefits for healthy older adults actively involved in music making."

Michelle Conda, piano pedagogy department head at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, agrees. "It is easier for adults to learn the material and practice successfully," says Conda, MTNA member and specialist in teaching music to older adults. She says older adults actually have a better chance at success in music studies than children.

For adults considering music lessons, Conda offers this advice:

You must have access to an instrument - one that is touch-sensitive and stays in tune. Eventually most students desire a better-quality instrument. Most music stores offer rent-to-own programs. Teachers also may require you to purchase music, notebooks and audio tapes for taping lessons.
Consider group and independent instruction. There is camaraderie in group study, and these students learn a lot from each other. Some adults prefer the one-on-one attention of independent study.
Do not fear embarrassment in front of class. Most group-lesson teachers are empathetic. In group piano classes, for instance, keyboards are usually configured facing the teacher. Often everyone wears headphones.
You don't have to play children's music. A wealth of materials has been designed with the adult in mind.
